In 1995, the Dominican Montecristo brand was introduced by Menendez y Garcia. They comes packed in a bright yellow box with a crossed swords emblem, which grew in popularity instantaneously resulting in numerous brand extensions. Five types of Montecristos are offered within this group. Between the years of 1994 and 1997 the cigars were all hand rolled within the Dominican Republic except for a fine USA grown Connecticut Shade wrapper. These cigars are used from year to year for monitoring blend consistency and the factory was adamant about keeping the 1999 samples for comparison purposes. However, we were finally able to convince them to let go of limited number of these premium cigars. The 1998 Buena Fortuna is the one irregular cigar in the group. This was the initial attempt at a Maduro wrapped cigar by the factory.
