In 1987, Menendez y Garcia decided to produce a Dominican Montecristo to compete with other manufacturers who already introduced non-Cuban versions of other premier Havana brands. There were eight sensational cigars introduced to the market by the renowned Montecristo cigar brand. The Number 1 or Lonsdale was a trial cigar and only size available, which was with a delicate robust Connecticut Shade wrapper. These cigars were stored away due to the fear of damaging the Montecristo trademark since they were drastically different from the traditional powerful Havanas. Up to a few thousand of these un-banded and unboxed trial cigars may have been produced each year between 1987 and 1993. These cigars are rare and the only ones their type. The cigars that are listed from each year may not be necessarily made of the same blend. In other words, there were no records kept for these cigars and if there were they are too difficult to track down over twenty years later. The factory placed bands on each cigar and packed them in quantities of ten to bring the cost down. Many of these cigars will sell very quickly while other may last for awhile. The price of these cigars is far from cheap, but this is a great deal guaranteed to be worth every penny.
